Kennard Middle Rhyne

from Revelution! by John D Revelator

/

about

Rather like Eskimos & snow, we in the Somerset levels have a range of terms for ditches, watercourses & incest. A medium sized watercourse is locally called a “Rhyne” (pronounced “reen”). Events real & imagined placed at a deliberately obscure location. Bring a 1:25000 map!

lyrics

Kennard Middle Rhyne

Guitar capo 5

Intro Em A7
Em G
Down with the frogs, mid the mud & the mussels
A7
Sits a sparkling stone of unusual lustre
Em G
All that’s left of love’s bluff & bluster
A7
A 9 carat ring with a fake diamond cluster

Em A7

Down in the depths in the back of beyond
Picked by the sticklebacks & spat by the swans
There was a time when this pretty ring
Was flashed around town on a delicate finger
Em A7
She was high & flighty in a festival haze
He tall & handsome in conventional ways
She fell in love on fine summer’s day
When she was out walking, he was making the hay
Em A7
Flaming love burned like fire fanned
By the following wind of a whirling romance
Round & round like a dervish dance
But it all turned round they never had a chance
Oh no…..
Em A7
A7 Em
But can you picture the scene?
G D
Going with the flow of love’s young dream
A7
Like the rushes & the duckweed in the lazy stream
Em G
Kissing on the sleeper bridge that crosses between
D A7
The lonely slopes on the banks of the Kennard Middle Rhyne

She promised togetherness, she promised everything
They went to the city for to buy her a ring
With her rocks & a smile sure her heart was singing
With dreams of family & wedding bells ringing

He promised her forever but he didn’t even try
She sat alone at home with tears in her eyes
Yet another morning when he hadn’t come back
She packed up her bags & said “that was that”
Oh no…..

But can you picture the scene?
The rude awakening from love’s young dream
Drowned in the water of the dirty stream
Crying on the sleeper bridge that crosses between
The lonely slopes on the banks of the Kennard Middle Rhyne

Em A7
Instrumental over chorus
Em A7 Em A7

She left him a note under the frying pan
Saying she’ gone back to find a better plan
She went back to where it all began
To fling that ring just as far as she can

On that bridge in the shadow of the Tor
Plagued by happy memories from years before
She took off the jewel for the final time
And played for a fool she kissed it goodbye
Oh no……

At the end of the dream
There was barely a shout there was narey a scream
Just a single teardrop in a sea of green
Just a “drip” & a “plop” to break the water’s sheen
By the lonely slopes on the banks of the Kennard Middle Rhyne

At the end of the dream
There was barely a shout there was narey a scream
Just a single teardrop in a sea of green
Just a “drip” & a “plop” to break the water’s sheen
By the lonely slopes on the banks of the Kennard Middle Rhyne
Em A7 Em A7 Em
